Glen Johnson: "Tarver and Jones shiver when you mention my name!"

13 Oct 2005 18:25       hits 9239

When BoxingTalk recently interviewed Roy Jones Jr. and Antonio Tarver, one name seemed to be missing on each of their radar screens…Glen Johnson. The Road Warrior is the only man in boxing to have a win over the two light heavyweight giants, and he is certain that both of them are too scared to enter the ring with him again. You do not want to miss what Johnson had to say about his fellow ring foes.

BoxingTalk: Glen, both Roy Jones and Antonio Tarver were interviewed on BoxingTalk recently and neither one of them mentioned your name. Instead Jones wants a 4th fight with Tarver, and Tarver is talking about moving up to heavyweight to fight Tyson, James Toney, and Vitali Klitschko. Give me your thoughts on all that?

Glen Johnson: We already know Tarver doesn’t want to get back in the ring with me. The whole world knows that. As far as Roy Jones, he feels safer fighting Tarver. We all saw what happened when Jones fought me, he doesn’t want me anymore. He can’t play safe with me the way he did against Tarver. Both Tarver and Jones are afraid to get in the ring with me. I know it and the whole world knows it.

BoxingTalk: Do you feel slighted that they seem to be ducking you?

Glen Johnson: The fact is they are ducking me. I’m the only one in the world who has a win over both Roy Jones and Tarver. I have a win over Roy Jones and he doesn’t want to see if he can get a win over me. If Tarver wants to separate himself from me as the best light heavyweight, then he needs to fight me. I’m most feared man in the light heavyweight division, and one that they definitely want to stay a way from. It’s bad for the fans when they fight people who are not a challenge.

BoxingTalk: Why do you think Jones and Tarver are not mentioning you as a next possible opponent?

Glen Johnson: We know they weren’t going to mention my name. Roy Jones and Tarver shiver when they hear my name. Unless the boxing media mentions my name, you’ll never hear it coming from them. They sweat in their suits when they hear my name. They won’t talk about someone who breaks them down.

BoxingTalk: If you can’t get Jones or Tarver, who is next for you?

Glen Johnson: I really don’t know. Eventually I’ll fight for the IBF light heavyweight championship again. Right now Clinton woods has it, but he has 9 months before he has to defend it, and he’ll probably take all that time.

BoxingTalk: Overall, how do you rate your performance against George Khalid Jones?

Glen Johnson: He was in the best shape of his life, and at the end he did his best to rally. I give myself an 8 out of 10. I’m trying to get better every day and to give the public the best fight I’m capable of giving them. My opponents and fans will always see a tougher Glen Johnson.

BoxingTalk: Since you knocked him down so early into the fight, did you think you were going to have a short night in the ring?

Glen Johnson: I thought it was going to be an early night, but when he got up, he was on two solid legs. That’s why I didn’t go after him afterwards. I was in no rush, I fought a solid fight and I broke him down one round at a time.

BoxingTalk thanks Mr. Johnson for taking the time to speak with us. We wish him continued success both in and out of the ring.
